In Brief – El Salvador; Guatemala

El Salvador| Homicide-free day. During the VI Summit of the Americas, which took place in Colombia over the weekend (14-15 April), President Mauricio Funes announced on 15 April that no-one was murdered in El Salvador the previous day. This makes it the country’s first homicide-free day in nearly three years, after murder levels had reached 18 homicides per day in early 2012. His announcement follows last month’s the truce between El Salvador’s two main gangs, Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) and Mara 18 (M18), which caused controversy for Funes given the lack of clarity regarding the government’s role in the alleged deal.
