The first ever primaries in Chile - held by the centre-left opposition Concertación on 1 April - gave a strong inkling that the country’s political preferences may be changing. The primaries were designed to re-connect the quadripartite Concertación coalition with the country’s increasingly disaffected electorate, and distinguish the Concertación from the ruling centre-right coalition, Coalición para el Cambio.
