Oil-fuelled regional leadership bid

Fidel Castro is said to have mused that, had he had Venezuela’s oil at his disposal, his plans to spread revolution across Latin America would have succeeded very swiftly. In 2004, with Cuba as an ally, President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela launched his own bid to spread his ‘Bolivarian’ revolution across the region, using Venezuela’s oil wealth as his instrument. Eight years on, the fate of his bid has shown that Fidel’s equation was not as straightforward as imagined.
