Greenpeace condemns forestry code. Brazil’s congress approved a reform to the forestry code yesterday that will give an amnesty to illegal deforestation/logging up to 2008, which environmentalists say will effectively open up vast swathes of rainforest to agribusiness. The bill will also allow farming in areas illegally logged before July 2008, including along fragile river banks. The bill will now go to President Dilma Rousseff for ratification. The local director of the NGO Greenpeace, Paulo Adário, said the vote was a “backward-looking victory”. Greenpeace and others want President Rousseff to veto the bill.
