In Brief – Nicaragua

Nicaragua | New PLC president. On 29 April the opposition Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC) of former president Arnoldo Alemán (1997-2002) held a party summit in which it picked María Haydée Osuna, a former PLC deputy and ex head of customs, as the president of its leadership committee, taking over from Jorge Castillo Quant. A close ally of Alemán, María Haydée Osuna takes over as the party is still in crisis following its hammering in the November 2011 general election which left it with just six seats in the 92-member unicameral legislature, down from the 25 it won in 2006. At the summit, the PLC also ratified Alemán as its ‘maximum leader’.
