Fish exports halted. On 30 April the strike by the union of maritime workers (Somu) continued for a fourth day running. The workers in Patagonian ports and the port of Mar del Plata, where most fish is exported from, have stopped loading containers with fish onto boats. The workers are demanding that the companies agree to hold salary talks and make all social security contributions they owe on behalf of the workers. A similar strike in 2008 eventually extended to all ports in the country as fishing companies decided to truck their cargo to the port of Buenos Aires in an attempt to by-pass the strike measure. The port of Mar del Plata handles 70% of all fishing in Argentina, which exports 97% of all the fish for an annual total of come US$1.5bn.
