In Brief – Colombia & Venezuela

Colombia | Increased sentencing for chemical attacks. On 8 May the chamber of deputies approved a bill (with only three votes against) that proposes higher sentences for people who carry out attacks using “a liquid or solid chemical agent”, which is generally acid. If the attack causes a “temporary physical deformity”, the attacker would spend between 16 and 108 months in prison and pay a fine of 20-37.5 minimum salaries; for attacks that leave a permanent injury the prison sentence would be of 32-126 months and a fine of 34.66-54 minimum salaries. “If the deformity affects the face, the minimum sentence will double and the maximum will increase by a third”, states the bill. The bill will now go to the senate.
