Jacobson saddened by Chávez’s announcement

Region: On 8 May Roberta Jacobson, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, denied that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IAHCR), an independent organ of the Organization of American States (OAS), is a political tool of the US government. Left-wing regional presidents, led by Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez, have recently reiterated criticism of the IAHCR, alleging that it is biased and an out-of-date tool of US imperialism. Chávez has proposed that Venezuela leave the IAHCR altogether. Jacobson expressed “sadness” at that proposal and said the US hoped that other Latin American nations would not follow his example. She also added that she saw no reason for the Washington-based commission to be moved to another country in the region.
