In Brief – Argentina

POLITICS| Approval rating. A survey published on 13 May by the local publication Perfil gave Argentina’s President Cristina Fernández an approval rating of 40.9% down from 42.1% in March and 59.1% in February. The decline was attributed to factors such as a major rail tragedy in February and a corruption scandal allegedly involving Vice-President Amado Boudou. The provincial governor of Buenos Aires, Daniel Scioli, also of the ruling Partido Justicialista (Peronists, PJ), had the highest approval in the polls, with 51.5%. On 12 May Scioli told reporters that he would be prepared to run for the presidency in 2015 in the “hypothetical case” that President Fernández does not seek re-election. The Management & Fit national poll surveyed 1,500 on 4-8 May.
