A political crisis greeted President Ollanta Humala when he returned this week from an official visit to Japan and South Korea to stump up trade. During his absence, the defence and interior ministers, Alberto Otárola and Daniel Lozada respectively, resigned. They did so to preclude a vote in congress to censure them for mishandling the recent operation to free hostages held by the faction of Sendero Luminoso operating in the valley of the Apurímac and Ene rivers (Vrae).
