COLOMBIA-VENEZUELA: US steps up pressure on Caracas over drugs

The Venezuelan government rejected claims this week by the US ambassador to Colombia, William Brownfield, that there had been a “tremendous increase" in the volume of drugs passing through Venezuela. The US has made similar claims ever since Venezuela suspended its cooperation with the US DEA in August 2006, but without supplying any concrete evidence. Brownfield appealed to the Venezuelan government to work together with the US to confront the problem.
