TRACKING TRENDS

BRAZIL | Record coffee harvest projected. Brazil’s Companhia Nacional de Abastecimiento (Conab), a state company forming part of the agriculture ministry, announced on 10 May that it expects Brazil to harvest a record coffee crop of 50.45m 60-kilo sacks this year. Brazil is the world’s main coffee exporter and producer but in recent years it has seen its production dwindle. Conab’s projection represents a 16% increase on last year’s harvest, but more importantly a 4% increase on 48.48m sacks harvested in the 2002-2003 harvest, the country’s largest ever. Conab attributed the strong increase in production to the high level of investments carried out over the last year which allowed producers to increase the total plantation area from 2.2m hectares (ha) to 2.4m, a 3% increase.
