Rousseff will veto forestry code, says Minc. Carlos Minc, the former federal environment minister and current environment secretary in the state of São Paulo, told reporters at an official event in São Paulo on 21 May that he was confident that President Dilma Rousseff would veto 12 or 14 articles of the reformed forestry code so as to reverse controversial measures watering down the code approved by congress in late April. Minc suggested that the executive is seeking to reinstate a previous version of the code, approved by the senate, that had forged a more balanced compromise between the demands of environmentalists and the influential agri-lobby (
ruralistas). Brazil will host the Rio+20 conference on climate change and sustainable development in June. Minc, of the Partido Verde, said that Rousseff “is not going to allow the Rio+20 to be marked by Brazil’s retreat [on its environmental legislation]. He added that he had discussed the matter personally with the president, who must act by 25 May. Rousseff, he said, “has had the courage to face extortionate interest rates, to install a truth commission, she will also have the courage to veto what was approved by the ruralista majority, defacing all our legislation to protect the forests”.
