BRAZIL: 3,178 politicians on ombudsman's black list


Last week, just three months before municipal elections, the public ombudsman published a list of 3,178 politicians whose campaign accounts in previous elections have been rejected because of irregularities. In theory, under Brazilian law, they should be barred from becoming candidates, not only in the forthcoming elections but also in any other elections. Even so, the supreme electoral court has once again signalled it will overlook the rule, leaving political parties to take responsibility for their candidacies. Regional electoral courts were disenchanted with the supreme electoral court's view.
