REGION: Unasur takes step towards spending transparency
The launch of South America’s first big step towards making the region’s defence spending more transparent, in the form of a book prepared by the strategic studies centre of Unasur’s South American defence council (CDS) made headlines on 10 May. Unheeded however went a straightforward prior announcement that what was about to be presented was a preview of that work’s conclusions — interesting enough but indicative of how far the region’s governments still have to go on the path to transparency.
