In Brief – Turks & Caicos

POLITICS | Election date set. On 12 June British Foreign Secretary William Hague announced that the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory, will hold elections on 9 November 2012. In 2009 the British government suspended the Turks and Caicos’ constitution and direct rule following a commission of inquiry into allegations of corruption by former Prime Minister Michael Misick (2003-2006) and his government. So far 13 individuals including four former government ministers have been formally charged in court with taking millions of dollars to fraudulently distribute government land and giving access to developers. In March last, an international arrest warrant was issued for Misick who is wanted for allegations of corruption and money laundering during his time in office.
