NICARAGUA: Ortega dredges up an old dream

President Daniel Ortega last week appeared to breathe new life into a very old initiative. On 6 June he sent a bill to the unicameral national assembly establishing the creation of a body responsible for the construction of an inter-oceanic canal. The initiative, which would involve the San Juan River, has unsurprisingly attracted the attention of Costa Rica with whom Nicaragua is currently locked in a territorial dispute over the river delta.
