Uruguay to welcome more Colombian refugees. On 18 June in Quito, Ecuador, Uruguay’s deputy foreign minister, Roberto Conde, announced that the Southern Cone nation will launch a rural development programme whereby 30 Colombian refugees will be assisted in settling in the Uruguayan countryside. Most internally-displaced Colombians, and those who have sought refuge overseas, have done so after being forced out of their rural lands during the country’s internal armed conflict. Uruguay will consider increasing the number of those accepted through the programme on a yearly basis.
