EL SALVADOR: Murder rate plummets

The first 100 days since a truce between rival mara gangs has seen a 58% reduction in homicides in El Salvador, which translates in absolute terms to eight fewer people being killed per day. The government of President Mauricio Funes was quick to distance itself from participation in the murky mediation process to begin with but the justice and public security minister, General David Munguía Payés, now maintains that the truce was part of his grand strategy.
