Martinelli honours his pledge. On 26 June President Ricardo Martinelli of Panama announced the approval by his cabinet council of a resolution leaving without effect the designation of three magistrates for the proposed fifth chamber (chamber of constitutional guarantees) in the supreme court. The move comes six days after Martinelli pledged to back down over the initiative, which along with proposed reforms that would allow the State to sell its shares in the telecoms and energy sectors, had proved
highly unpopular.
