PLN sets date for presidential primary. On 4 July Johnny Araya, the mayor of San José and one of the presidential hopefuls for the ruling Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), informed the party's president, Bernal Jiménez, that he agreed with the proposal to hold the party's national convention alongside the district assemblies scheduled for April 21 2013. On that day the convention will decide who is to represent the PLN in the 2014 presidential contest. The four declared candidates in the primary race are: Araya; Rodrigo Arias, the brother of former President Oscar Arias who served as minister of the presidency in both of his administrations (1986-1990 and 2006-2010); Fernando Berrocal Soto, the former minister of the presidency under the Luis Alberto Monge administration (1982-1986) and former minister of governance and public security during Arias's second administration (2006-2008); and Antonio Alvarez Desanti, a former minister of agriculture & livestock and also of the interior in Arias's first administration.
