In Brief – Colombia

POLITICS | Uribe, a top source of negative media coverage on Colombia. On 4 July the ministry of foreign relations released the results of a study conducted by Global News Intelligence (GNI) Latinoamérica for the Juan Manuel Santos administration, according to which between 29 December 2011 and 31 May 2012 statements and actions by the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) and former President Alvaro Uribe (2002-2010) accounted for the top two sources of negative international press coverage of Colombia. GNI studied 12,000 articles and 65,000 statements, of which the foreign press published 394 relating to the Farc and 263 relating to Uribe. However, when April and May are taken on their own, Uribe becomes the top source of negative coverage with 40.2% of the total negative mentions of Colombia in the foreign press. “I think it is very sad that it is ourselves who generate the negative [image] overseas”, Foreign Minister María Angela Holguín said yesterday after releasing the full report.
