Colombian soldiers caught red-handed

Significance: According to military intelligence, Lieutenant Carlos Alberto Ariza Melo had been under surveillance for six months for his suspected links to the Urabeños criminal group (Bacrim). The military men, who performed security duties in Medellín's infamous Comuna 13, are believed to have been moving the cocaine  on behalf of the criminal gang, Oficina de Envigado, for onward shipment to Central America on fast boats. The capture and massive drugs seizure comes as the first Colombian General indicted in the US for alleged links to the paramilitary Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) and the Oficina de Envigado, Mauricio Santoyo Velasco, is due to appear before a federal judge in Virginia today (5 July). Santoyo was also based in Medellín for most of his professional career.

Key points:

  • In addition to the five military men, authorities also detained four civilians travelling with them, believed to be members of the Urabeños.

  • Antioquia's state attorney general's office yesterday filed charges against the five soldiers before a judge of guarantees in Apartadó. They were carged with narco trafficking, agravated conspiracy to commit a crime and the use of weapons restricted to the armed forces. The prosecutor has requested that the defendants be held on remand.

  • In a separate operation (Operación Pescador) in which the authorities detained 33 people for alleged membership of the self-proclaimed Autodefensas Unidas Nortesantandereanas (AUN),  three soldiers,  a local police officer and a lawyer were arrested in Cúcuta, capital of Norte de Santander department. Authorities are still searching for another police officer. All the detainees are suspected of participation in at least 50 homicides. The AUN was founded by former members of the Urabeños.
