The presidential candidate for Venezuela’s opposition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), Henrique Capriles Radonski, is descended from Simón Bolívar, the Liberator and iconic figurehead of President Hugo Chávez’s Bolivarian Revolution. That is, at least, according to the president of Venezuela’s genealogical institute, Antonio Herrera Vaillant, who revealed the results of extensive research he said he had carried out to coincide with Bolívar’s birthday on 24 July. Chávez, meanwhile, unveiled “the face” of Bolívar, a 3D portrait based on computerised scans of Bolívar’s skull.
