Boycotting elections. The dissident Movimiento de Renovaciόn Sandinista (MRS) is refusing to participate in municipal elections on 4 November on the grounds that the conditions are not in place for “clean, transparent and competitive” elections. The MRS called on other opposition parties to follow suit. It argued that the supreme electoral council (CSE) committed fraud in the last municipal elections in 2008 and the presidential elections last November in favour of the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberaciόn Nacional (FSLN) and was completely controlled by President Daniel Ortega. The Partido Liberal Independiente (PLI) has also denounced irregularities but it has given no indication that it intends to withdraw from the contest.
