MEXICO: Murder rate slows

The number of murders linked to organised crime is down. Local commentators are speculating that the lull in the violence in June can be attributed to the elections on 1 July as drug-trafficking organisations (DTOs) avidly followed the security proposals of the leading candidates in the presidential contest and the future composition of congress to gauge the political will for waging a war on organised crime for the next sexenio. This is a moot point, but what is clear is that unless there is a spike over the remaining five months of the year, the number of murders in 2012 tied to organised crime will be the lowest since 2009.
