The number of murders linked to organised crime is down. Local commentators are speculating that the lull in the violence in June can be attributed to the elections on 1 July as drug-trafficking organisations (DTOs) avidly followed the security proposals of the leading candidates in the presidential contest and the future composition of congress to gauge the political will for waging a war on organised crime for the next
sexenio. This is a moot point, but what is clear is that unless there is a spike over the remaining five months of the year, the number of murders in 2012 tied to organised crime will be the lowest since 2009.
