GUATEMALA: Putting success against crime in perspective

The government of President Otto Pérez Molina is boasting continuing success in its effort to bring down Guatemala’s homicide rate, through a combination of ‘mano dura’, better intelligence and coordination between the law enforcement effort and the judiciary. However, unofficial data suggest that the improvement is not as substantial as the government claims, and even official sources report that crimes other than homicide are on the rise.
