Martelly secures help to build new army. On 26 July Brazil’s defence minister, Celso Amorim, announced that his country had agreed to assist Haiti in creating a new army. President Michel Martelly had requested this support from his Brazilian peer, Dilma Rousseff, when he visited Brazil last January. Amorim has agreed with his Haitian counterpart, Rodolphe Joazile, that a mission of Brazil’s three armed services will travel to Haiti within weeks to start assessing the country’s needs. Amorim has put special emphasis on plans to send Haitians to Brazil to train as army engineers, to prepare a corps able to deal with natural disasters.
