Rousseff begins marathon sessions to end public sector strikes. President Dilma Rousseff is seeking to atomise the string of public sector strikes by selective negotiations with certain sectors. Yesterday Rousseff gathered with her planning minister Miriam Belchior, Justice Minister José Eduardo Martins Cardozo, the minister of the presidency Gleisi Hoffman and the federal attorney general, Luís Inácio Adams. The strategy is to make concessions only to low paid workers. Despite the political pressures of municipal elections in October the president has taken a hard line with the estimated 350,000 striking federal sector workers, pointing out that the government’s priority is to concentrate its available budget resources in support of the struggling private sector, which is most affected by this year’s economic downturn.
