In his state of the nation address marking the 187
th anniversary of Bolivia’s independence, President Evo Morales highlighted “corruption and drug trafficking” as the country’s main weaknesses. The admissions come amid renewed concern regarding security in Bolivia. While the government recently promulgated a long-awaited citizen security law, a deadly attack on two buses last month by delinquents and suspected drug traffickers – described as “unprecedented” by Security Minister Carlos Romero – focused attention on changing patterns of narco-trafficking activity in the country. The Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government has also been on the defensive over claims by various US officials that cocaine production is on the rise.
