Weekly Report - 16 August 2012 (WR-12-32)

TRACKING TRENDS

MEXICO | Industrial production on the up. According to data from Mexico’s national geographic and statistics institute (Inegi) released on 13 August, the country’s industrial production grew 4% in the first half of 2012 after recoding a 3.7% increase in June. Inegi explained that the result was driven by positive results in three of the four areas used to measure industrial production such as manufacturing (up 4.9%), construction (4.5%) and energy generation (2%). Analysing the growth in each sector, Inegi pointed out that in the construction sector there was an increase in both residential and non-residential construction projects as well as in civil and heavy engineering projects. This in turn increased demand for various construction materials such as electrical cables, iron bars and posts, metallic structures, and cement and concrete all of which further stimulated increased production in the manufacturing sector. Other manufacturing areas such as food production, the production of metallic, plastic and rubber products, as well as wooden products all saw a “substantial” increase. The Inegi now believes that Mexico’s industrial production by the end of the year could easily exceed the 3.8% increase it recorded last year. However, analysts forecast that the figure would remain at about the same level with a 3.7% increase.
