Quijano confirmed for 2014. On 20 August the party leadership committee (Coena) of the main right-wing opposition party, the Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena), confirmed San Salvador’s mayor, Norman Quijano, as its presidential candidate ahead of the March 2014 presidential election (
see Quijano’s profile). The announcement followed a selection process by Coena, in which the other main aspirants - Ana Vilma de Escobar, the former vice-president under the administration of Tony Saca (2004-2009); Francisco Laínez, a former foreign minister under Saca; Deputy Edwin Zamora; and Mercedes Gloria Salguero Gross, a founder of Arena, former party president (1996-97) and member of Coena (1991-97) - were told to step aside. Quijano will face Vice-President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, of the incumbent left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN).
