POLITICS & FOREIGN RELATIONS | Garzón to take UK to the ICJ. Earlier today (23 August) Baltasar Garzón, the former magistrate of the Spanish Audiencia Nacional who is currently in charge of the defence of Julian Assange, the Australian founder of WikiLeaks, announced in Sydney that he will turn to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague to demand that the UK government grants safe passage to his client. Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in the UK since June and was granted political asylum by President Rafael Correa on 16 August, triggering a diplomatic spat between the two nations. Yesterday (22 August) President Correa said he remained open to dialogue with the UK, so long as the British government formally takes off the table the possibility of breaching the inviolability of the Ecuadorean embassy in London.
