The paradox of poverty

The Mexican presidential election of July 2012, though still disputed, is likely to result in the return to power of the Partido Revolucionario Institutional (PRI) after an absence of 12 years. The return of the PRI raises questions over the future direction of economic policy and the prospects for bringing down the unacceptably high rate of poverty in Mexico, where just over 50% of the population (of 112m) is still classed on official measures as living in poverty.
