For years Mexico’s authorities have been accused of not doing enough to break up some of the near-monopolies that exist in parts of the important telecommunications sector and of being too lenient with the powerful companies that dominate the sector. In recent months Mexico’s regulatory bodies appear to have found the wherewithal to finally take action to increase competition in the sector. However, the measures adopted have come under fire, as some critics believe that they will favour certain firms at the expense of others. At a politically sensitive time, as Mexico prepares for a change of administration, there have been accusations that President Felipe Calderón himself is behind the measures.
