Repression, mega-projects & ‘micro-hydros’

The heavy-handed repression of protest actions in Huehuetenango last May illustrate the determination of the government of President Otto Pérez Molina to push ahead with its plans to rely heavily on hydroelectricity, regardless of objections. It has three new mega-projects in the pipeline. Guatemala, however, is also becoming a showplace for eco- and people-friendlier small and ‘micro-hydro’ plants.
