GUATEMALA: Remittances continue to rise

Remittances up: According to the latest report from Guatemala’s central bank (Banguat), remittances totalled US$2.78bn in the first seven months of 2012, a 10% increase on the same period of 2011. Inflows were a record US$4.38bn in 2011, the majority from the US. The national migration authorities also reported that 22,876 illegal Guatemalan migrants were deported from the US between January and 20 July. Last year the total number deported was 30,855. In May 2012 a record 4,301Guatemalan citizens were deported, a 50% increase on May 2011.
