Government rocked. The ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) has bestridden national politics for seven years but it suddenly looks vulnerable with just 10 months until presidential elections. For one thing it will be without its talisman, President Leonel Fernández, who cannot seek re-election, but even if he were able to stand Fernández would be up against it. Public opinion has no respect for reputations and Fernández’s star is waning. A CID Gallup poll published this week gave him an approval rating of just 30%, dwarfed by a disapproval rating of 63%.
