VENEZUELA: Capriles refines attacks after fire

At least 41 people died after an explosion at the Amuay refinery in north-west Venezuela early on 25 August triggered a devastating fire. The government downplayed the severity of the damage, and insisted the refinery would be back up and running before the end of this week. Its reaction betrayed a concern that the opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski would use the disaster to try and gain political advantage ahead of elections on 7 October. Capriles confined himself to demanding an in-depth investigation and not a cover-up.
