More surcharges, this time on debit cards and online purchases. Following up on the imposition of a 15% levy on credit card transactions abroad, the national tax agency (Afip) on 3 September announced that the levy would also apply to international transactions made with debit cards and online purchases from abroad. The Afip says the charge is a pre-payment of income tax and will be deductible from year-end tax bills. Critics counter that the latest measures amount to fresh intervention by a government desperate to prevent Argentines from using US dollars in particular.
