The government’s decision to suspend publication of statistics on the drug-war toll and the use of unsupported figures to claim a significant decline in violence overall have clashed with evidence to the contrary from private sources, and have encouraged the view that President Felipe Calderón is trying hard to portray his drive against international drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) as successful before he leaves office in December. An upsurge of drug-related violence in August has led him to try another tack: a mass deployment of troops and federal police in eight states considered as the new hotspots.
