PERU: Peru’s approach to indigenous rights to the test

During the coming weeks, the Peruvian government will organise the first ‘prior consultation’ of indigenous peoples since the enactment of the ‘prior consultation law’ in September 2011. Pluspetrol’s drilling authorisation in the 1AB Allotment, located in the Amazon, expires in 2015. According to the law, the State has to carry out a public consultation before renewing the drilling license.
