BOLIVIA: Morales hails drug success

The Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government of President Evo Morales has received a major boost vis-à-vis its anti-drug efforts: last week the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released a report revealing a 12% year-on-year drop in coca cultivation in Bolivia in 2011 – the first reduction since Morales first took office in January 2006. The timing of the report was particularly fortuitous for the Morales government, coming days after the US – which objects to its ‘coca sí, cocaína no’ policy - once again blacklisted Bolivia for failing “demonstrably” in anti-drug efforts in the past year.
