MINING | Comibol president resigns in Bolivia. On 21 September Bolivia’s mining minister, Mario Virreira, swore in metallurgist Edgar Pinto Landaeta as the new interim president of the state mining company, Comibol. The former manager of the Vinto tin foundry, before it was renationalised under the government of President Evo Morales, Pinto takes over from Héctor Córdova, who the local press reported on 20 September had in fact submitted his resignation two weeks earlier over the current dispute between formal and cooperative miners over the development of the tin/zinc Colquiri mine in La Paz. Córdova’s resignation – which was one of the demands of the salaried workers, along with that of Virerira, Comibol’s technical manager and director, Jorge Collazos and José Pimentel – is the first fall-out of the dispute.
