Chile opens door to lithium exploitation

The lucrative lithium sector in Chile is now officially open to competition. On 24 September a Chilean company Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM) won the first government contract to extract lithium in Chile. The government of President Sebastian Piñera had designated lithium a strategic sector for growth, and last June announced a national tender process for lithium exploitation.
