Mexico’s Left - In Flux

Mexico City’s outgoing leftist mayor, Marcelo Ebrard of the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), on 18 September announced that he intends to contest the next presidential election in 2018. He made his ambition known just over a week after the defeated 2012 left-wing presidential candidate, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced his resignation from the PRD to concentrate on his own left-wing civic movement, Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional (Morena). López Obrador also proposed a consultation as to whether Morena should seek to become a registered political party – undoubtedly with a view to using it as a vehicle for his third consecutive presidential bid.
