El Salvador’s Arena ratifies Quijano as its 2014 presidential candidate. On 30 September, at its general assembly, the main right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena), confirmed San Salvador’s mayor,
Norman Quijano, as its presidential candidate ahead of the March 2014 presidential election. Ratified by more than 27,000 party delegates from the country’s 14 departments, Quijiano will face Vice-President (and former education minister) Salvador Sánchez Cerén of the incumbent left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), who has also been confirmed ahead of 2014. A recent poll by Mitofsky and LPG-Datos, published in September, showed Quijano ahead with 47% of voting intentions; Sánchez Cerén came in second on 26%.
