Mexico: On 30 September the Office of the attorney general for Nayarit state (PGJE) announced the capture of Francisco Javier Cantabrana, believed to have close links to ‘Nacho Coronel’ (Ignacio Coronel Villareal), presumed to be one of the four leaders of Mexico’s Sinaloa gang, who was killed in 2010. According to the local press, Cantabrana was captured in the Mololoa neighbourhood, in Tepic, Nayarit’s capital, by the Mexican police working in conjunction with Interpol. Cantabrana featured on the US Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) ‘most wanted’ list for his alleged links to ‘Nacho Coronel’ and faces extradition orders to the US where he is to be charged with criminal conspiracy and drugs distribution. On 1 October, Cantabrana was transferred to the maximum security prison of El Altiplano in Almoloya de Juárez, in the Estado de México, where he could wait up to 60 days for a judge to decide his possible extradition to the US.
