Opposition names its choice for Beni vote. On 9 October the Frente Único opposition coalition in the region of Beni named Carmelo Lenz Frederiksen, the current deputy governor of Vaca Diez, Beni’s biggest province, as its candidate for the Beni regional election, scheduled for 20 January 2013. The Frente Único coalition comprises: Primero Beni, led by former governor Ernesto Suárez, whose removal amid corruption allegations (which he claims were politically motivated) triggered the election; Verdes, who is allied with the country’s sole opposition governor, Rubén Costas of Santa Cruz; and national parties such as Unidad Nacional (UN), Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR), Acción Democrática Nacionalista (ADN) and Convergencia Nacional. The only other candidate declared so far is Jessica Jordan, a former Miss Bolivia and current head of the State agency for the development of macro-regions and border areas in Beni (Ademaf), she is running for President Evo Morales’s ruling Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). Jordan was defeated by Súarez in the April 2010 local elections by 43% to 40%.
